Elephant Fence Restoration

The first phase for this year was to replace the most degraded section of the fence, which has now been completed, with the balance of the fence line to be replaced in 2022. In total 10km of fence line will be replaced providing much-needed security to the Munya community members.

The problem of elephant raiding crops and conflict with humans more often than not results in retaliatory responses from the community members – sometimes leading to the unfortunate killing of elephants. These interactions risk the lives of both the community members and the local elephant population, and the replacement of the fence will go a long way to increasing the safety of the community members, and protecting their livelihoods, whilst at the same time ensuring that retaliatory measures against elephant are avoided.

I would like to call upon other institutions to do the good job that you are doing and will continue to do. This will save the lives of the animals and also the people who live here,” says Enock Nyatiogo Ombworu a community member.
