Hardy Market Clean Up - Karen

This clean up was achieved through the construction of garbage collection bins and the facilitation of weekly garbage collection. Prior to the exercise, the improper handling of solid waste and its indiscriminate disposal in an open space next to the road gave rise to numerous potential hazards to the environment as well as presenting potential health threats to both the market operators as well as the nearby residents.

Under the guidance of KLDA (Karen and Langata District Association) and the Nairobi City Council the initiative involved engaging with the market operators to educate them on sanitation issues and provided opportunities for local businesses, communities, and authorities to collaborate with regards to finding sustainable solutions to the waste issues in the area. The project also delivered a candid message to the market operators on the need to manage waste effectively at the market and taking ownership of the project.

In addition, the Group also organized a clean-up exercise to address the litter that had already accumulated at the dump site and the surrounding streets, this was done by staff from Group, Eezy Track and Premier, in conjunction with some of the market operators. Together with increased collaboration with KLDA and Nairobi City Council the Group hopes to engage in frequent clean up exercises in future to ensure long term sustainability of the project.
