Kuruwitu, which is located on the coast, north of Mombasa and south of Kilifi, is one of Kenya’s key ecosystems, however before 2006, the region’s marine life had steadily declined over decades, and the local community’s livelihood had been greatly affected.
Our funding is directed at projects with large-scale impacts, such as expanding the extent of locally managed marine areas, improving sustainable livelihoods from fisheries, and restoration of the coral reef in the core protected areas.
In 2022, funding provided by the Foundation has supported the manufacture of coral tables and plugs, and then the growing and out-planting of coral juveniles into designated coral gardens across an area of 200m2 - both with the use of artificial reefs as well as the degraded natural substrate.
The artificial reefs are already positively impacting the local marine species within the sanctuary which will have many long-term benefits for marine biodiversity, as well as tourism, in the area going forward.
Over the past 12 years, the Group has supported Rhino Ark in their initiatives through our involvement with their annual Rhino Charge event – the funds from which are used to support ongoing Rhino Ark initiatives.
